This bronze sculpture of the Lion Qui Marche, or Walking Lion, is cast after Antoine-Louis Barye. The father of the modern Animalier school modeled his lion around 1840. Read its story.

Called the father of the modern Animalier school, Barye learned his animals from life at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. After his death in 1875, his remaining models passed to the Barbedienne foundry, which offered them in bronze. He had modeled the Walking Lion around 1840, and this lion belongs to its afterlife, cast decades later from Barye's design.
At heart the sculpture is a study of strength and grace. Its finely detailed modeling blends realism with stylized elegance, a balance that sits easily beside Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
