THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story of“Autumn” by Lenox

THIS SET
Handcrafted during Lenox's golden age of American porcelain, this set of eight Autumn soup bowls represents first-generation production from the 1920s. Introduced in 1918 as one of Lenox's most celebrated patterns, Autumn achieved such acclaim that it graced formal tables for over a century, serving as the foundation for Lenox's White House commissions from President Wilson forward.

This set includes:
• Eight (8) rimmed soup bowls - 8.5" diameter x 1.25"H (21.6cm x 3.2cm)

Each bowl showcases the pattern's signature multicolored fruit and floral motif created through painstaking hand-enameled dots fired multiple times to build dimensional color. The ivory fine bone china body features Lenox's proprietary presidential formula, rimmed in lustrous 24-karat gold with intricate scrollwork borders surrounding a central basket medallion. This labor-intensive enameling process, requiring separate firings for each color application, represents traditional American china craftsmanship at its finest. The raised enamel dots on these early pieces exhibit the plump, dimensional quality that distinguishes 1920s production from later runs.

Details:
• Collection: Lenox Presidential | Design: "The Autumn" (Pattern S1)
• Material: Ivory fine bone china with hand-applied raised enamel dots
• Size: 8.5" diameter x 1.25"H (21.6cm x 3.2cm)
• Backstamp Period: Black wreath with "DESIGN COPYRIGHT" (1918-1930 production)
• Designer: Lenox Studio Artists, 1918 original design
• Made in: Trenton, New Jersey, USA
• Production Period: 1920s (confirmed by absence of "Made in U.S.A." mark added in 1931)
• Authentication: Lenox wreath backstamp with "THE AUTUMN" and "DESIGN COPYRIGHT" designations
• Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition consistent with age, hand-applied 24-karat gold rim shows warm original patina, raised enamel dots intact with dimensional quality characteristic of early production
