THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story of“Chinese Bouquet Rust” by Herend

THIS SET
Herend's Shape 1506 coupe soup bowls represent one of the manufactory's rarest and most sought-after forms—discontinued decades ago and seldom appearing in complete matched sets. These eight bowls showcase the timeless Chinese Bouquet Rust pattern with sculptural scalloped edges that required exceptional artisan skill to produce without firing flaws, each rim individually gilt-trimmed by hand to create dimensional elegance that transforms everyday soup service into collected heirloom moments.

This set includes:
• Eight (8) Coupe Soup Bowls, Shape 1506 - 8¼" diameter (21cm), 1.5" depth (3.8cm)

An ideal starting point for collectors seeking authentic European porcelain rather than contemporary imitations, this set delivers Herend's documented heritage at an accessible price—the same timeless pattern featured regularly in Veranda and Town & Country as a design editor favorite for its enduring versatility.

Details:
• Collection: Herend Porcelain | Design: "Chinese Bouquet Rust" (Apponyi Orange)
• Material: Hungarian hard-paste porcelain with hand-painted underglaze decoration in rust and coral tones, 24k gold scalloped rim
• Size: 8¼" diameter (21cm) | 1.5" depth (3.8cm) | Capacity approximately 12-14 ounces per bowl
• Made in: Hungary
• Production Period: 1990s (matching backstamp era to accompanying pieces)
• Authentication: Blue castle backstamp reading "HUNGARY" with Shape 1506 marking
• Rarity: Discontinued piece—Shape 1506 coupe soup bowls are significantly scarcer than standard rimmed soup plates, rarely appearing in complete sets of eight
• Condition: Excellent—museum-quality presentation with no chips, cracks, repairs, or crazing across all eight bowls. All 24k gilt trim intact with no wear on delicate scalloped edges. Interiors pristine with no utensil marks or staining. Bowls stack perfectly with no warping.

The Chinese Bouquet Rust pattern showcases Herend's mastery of hand-painted botanical artistry, featuring stylized peony blossoms and bamboo sprays in warm rust and coral tones accented with 24k gold. These Shape 1506 coupe soup bowls represent a particularly rare form within the Chinese Bouquet canon—discontinued by Herend and far less common than the standard rimmed soup plates that dominate the secondary market. The sculptural scalloped edges, each individually gilt-trimmed by hand, create elegant dimensional waves around the rim while requiring exceptional skill to produce without chips or firing flaws. The deeper coupe well design makes these bowls supremely functional for hearty soups, stews, pasta dishes, and generous salad servings, while the scalloped silhouette elevates them beyond utilitarian service pieces into displayable works of decorative art. The coral-to-rust gradient particularly suits contemporary interiors embracing warm earth tones, and each bowl's hand-painted botanical placement varies slightly, creating an artisan collection rather than mass-produced uniformity. Finding eight matching coupe bowls in pristine condition with intact scalloped gilt rims represents an exceptional acquisition opportunity for collectors completing or expanding Chinese Bouquet services.
