In Feng Shui the Laughing Buddha is said to draw positive energy into a home, his joyful expression and relaxed posture an open welcome. This sculpture was found in the collection of a Washington, D.C. collector of Asian art.
At heart the piece is all ease, yet it carries real weight. The figure is cast in thick-walled bronze, dense and substantial and heavier than contemporary castings, so his good humour has a real presence in a room.
Time has given the surface a character of its own. A naturally aged patina deepens the warm bronze tones, with soft green verdigris settling across it for depth. He sits on a rosewood base carved by hand in intricate detail, entirely at rest.
