The Lladró brothers took up their craft in 1953 in the family house in Almàssera, starting with plates, vases and figurines. This piece turns their porcelain to the tenderness and warmth a mother and her child share. Its title names the admiration a child feels, and Alfredo Llorens is credited with giving that feeling its form.
Introduced in 2000, this figure is hand sculpted and painted in Spain, with its delicate detailing set off by a lustrous glaze. The blue Lladró mark on the base signs it as the house's own work.
Light glides over the glossy finish and picks out each fine detail. The bond between mother and child stays at the heart of the piece, a sentimental keepsake that grows dearer with every year it is kept.
Lladró began as a family dream. In 1953 the brothers Juan, José and Vicente Lladró began making figurines, vases and plates in their family home in Almàssera. Their first pieces took their inspiration from Meissen, Sèvres and Capodimonte, and a new Spanish art was about to take shape.
Lladró says the single firing method it introduced in the 1960s helped define the soft pastel tones of its figures. In 1988 the Lladró Museum and Gallery opened in Manhattan. In 1991 St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum hosted an exhibition of Lladró sculpture, and Don Quixote found a permanent place there. Spain honored the house in 1993 with its Príncipe Felipe Prize for Internationalization.
Today Lladró makes its home in Tavernes Blanques, Valencia, where it creates porcelain figurines and decorative sculpture. Its figures now dance in homes around the world, admired by collectors with a romantic heart. They know each piece began with brothers working at home in a small Spanish village.
