Wilson placed that order with Lenox of Trenton, New Jersey. Every piece of this set is American made as well. Its ivory porcelain gives the pattern a calm, pale ground, so the colors of the season read clearly against it.
The same year, Lenox designed the Autumn pattern. On this set, decorators applied the raised enamel by hand, adding a subtle texture that catches light beautifully during candlelit dinners. The effect stays quiet and refined, an autumn palette that warms a formal table without crowding it.
The fruit and florals form a delicate arrangement in blue and gold, with warm touches of red, orange and green. A gold rim frames the design with formal polish, never overwhelming what it encloses.
Lenox was born of a boyhood dream. Walter Scott Lenox resolved early to work in ceramics, and as a young man he built an excellent reputation in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1889 he and Jonathan Coxon opened the Ceramic Art Company there. It began as a small studio of artists painting ivory china by hand.
Its great moment came in 1918. That year President Woodrow Wilson commissioned the distinguished house to make the first American-made state service for the White House, with the presidential seal in raised gold. In 1928 Lenox was the only American porcelain chosen for display at the National Museum of Ceramics in Sèvres. Eleanor Roosevelt turned to Lenox in 1934, and Nancy Reagan later selected its design for the Reagan state china.
