Diamond cuts catch the light all over this navette bowl. It comes from Ireland, where the story goes that glasshouses prospered because England taxed its own glass in 1745. Read its story.

Around 1790, an Irish cutter likely worked this bowl facet by facet, cutting and polishing each one by hand until the whole surface sparkled. On a formal table it held the master salt, a jewel of cut glass set among the dishes.
The navette form was fashionable for its elegant boat-like silhouette. Here it rides high on a stepped pedestal, in the period's architectural approach to useful things. The glass carries a greyish tint often associated with Irish crystal.
Scallops ripple along the rim like the edge of a shell. The stepped pedestal stands on a square lemon squeezer base, cut in a concave star. Light runs down through the diamonds and gathers in that star at its foot.
