Carl Teichert's firm is said to have begun as a stove-tile workshop in Meissen before it grew into a porcelain maker, and its Blue Onion found wide favor. Here Zwiebelmuster, as the pattern is also known, reimagines Chinese botanical motifs for European eyes. Each stylized bloom is drawn with a painter's grace.
The art of the pattern lies in how its painting becomes one with the porcelain itself. The blue is applied by hand beneath the glaze on heavy hard-paste porcelain, so decoration and body fuse into a single surface.
A broad oval opens like a canvas, giving the flowers room to spread across the clean white ground, bright as ink on fine paper. The blossoms seem to drift as if carried on a summer breeze.
