Carrie Marcus Neiman opened the store in Dallas in 1907 with her husband and brother, and it grew a reputation for high quality. By the 1970s, luxury department stores like it defined a sophisticated taste in entertaining. Malachite captures that taste in porcelain, made for a table set to impress.
At heart, the pattern imitates a prized stone. Its finish recalls malachite, the green mineral that lined the columns and fireplace of the Winter Palace's Malachite Room. A specialized glaze on high-fired Japanese porcelain renders that look.
Rich greens curl and eddy across every plate like silk in a current, deep and luminous. Around the edge runs a lustrous rim of real gold, warm against the cool emerald.
