The Story ofBambous

THE PATTERN

Before the first glass is poured, Bambous place card holders by Baccarat stand each guest's name upright in crystal. The seating plan becomes a quiet ceremony of its own, with every name waiting at its place along the table.

These holders rest on one sculptural idea, a scallop shell repeated with no change in shape or size, so the whole table reads as one design. Turned over, the one in the photographs shows a round acid-etched Baccarat mark beneath its base.

Rounded ribs sweep down to a wave-like scroll at the foot of each shell, where the card comes to rest. The rectangular base rises beneath in crisp, stepped tiers that catch the light at every edge. Gold foil Baccarat labels in script still sit on most of the holders, set against the clear crystal.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
