King Louis-Philippe placed his own order with Baccarat for the Harcourt. Nancy looks closer to home, said to be named after the ancient capital of Lorraine near the house's workshops in eastern France. This goblet is its water glass, cut by hand at the base with delicate crosshatched lines.
At the Dolmabahçe Palace, a staircase is lined with a Baccarat crystal balustrade. Here the play of light is gathered low, where the rigorous geometry of this goblet's cutting refracts every glint that reaches it.
Above the cut base, the smooth upper bowl rises plain and clear, made for water service. Water poured in picks up the refracted light below, and the base flickers through the crystal like frost on glass. At each place setting, it turns a formal table toward old-world French luxury with quiet ease.
Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.
Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.
