THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story ofMassena

THE PATTERN

With Massena, the Baccarat maison sets power against lightness, cutting deep bevels that rise from the base. This claret wine jug carries the idea on a squat rounded body that narrows into a tall slender neck.

Baccarat names no single designer for Massena and credits the pattern to the maison alone. Its bevels are cut into the clear crystal itself, held to a band around the lower body. Above them the shoulder and neck stay smooth, so the faceted band and the plain glass each make the other look brighter.

A tall loop handle sweeps from the shoulder up to the rim, which pinches into a wavy curve for pouring. A solid ball stopper crowns the neck on its tapering stem, and a stepped round foot steadies the jug below. Filled with red wine, the bevels glow like embers each time the jug tilts to pour.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
