THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story ofMassena

THE PATTERN

In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave Baccarat a royal commission, the first the fabled French maison had received. Here Baccarat blends that royal past with the bold geometry of Massena, a pattern whose earliest pieces it dates to 1975. The design is credited to Baccarat itself rather than to any one designer.

Massena pairs strength with lightness, the idea at the heart of the pattern. Baccarat cuts deep bevels that radiate upward from the foot, then leaves the rest of the bowl smooth and open. On a Bordeaux glass that clear upper bowl gives the wine room to show its color, while the faceted base holds steady beneath it.

Rising from a fluted stem, pointed bevels close around the lower bowl like a crown of spires. Beneath them the stem widens into a round foot, where radiating facets open like a rosette. When the glass turns, light runs down each cut and breaks into sparks across the foot.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
