THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story ofMassena

THE PATTERN

In the early 1840s, King Louis-Philippe commissioned a glass from Baccarat, the design known today as Harcourt. These Massena white wine glasses show the maison in a bolder, more modern mood, where the whole ornament lies in the cut.

At heart, Massena is a pattern of contrast, strength set against lightness. Deep bevels are worked straight into the clear French crystal and stop partway up the bowl, so the plain glass above them shines brighter for it. By its own telling, Baccarat credits Massena to the maison as a whole rather than to a single designer.

A fluted stem widens into the foot, where facets fan out like the spokes of a wheel. Higher up, the bowl swells plain and rounded, a clear vessel for a chilled white. Once the wine is poured, the bevels around it glint pale gold as each glass turns.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
