The Story ofMassena

Tall bevel cuts climb Baccarat's Massena flutes, then give way to clear crystal. By one account, King Louis XV allowed the Baccarat glassworks to rise in Lorraine in 1764. Read its story.

THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story ofMassena

THE PATTERN

That royal consent set a glassworks working in Baccarat, a town in the east of France. Here French crystal turns modern in Massena, a pattern the maison still makes today, cut for the sparkle of a champagne toast.

Baccarat dates the first Massena pieces to 1975, and the iconic French maison built the pattern on a play of opposites. Deep bevels are carved straight into clear crystal and fan upward toward the bowl. Below, the glass feels sculpted and strong; above, it stays as light and open as air.

Each flute stands on a round foot cut with facets that spread like a star, and its fluted stem flares gracefully down to meet it. The pointed bevels rise from that stem like slender flames. Light gathers in the faceted foot and glitters outward as the flute is lifted.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
