THE CURATOR’S NOTES

The Story ofMasséna

THE PATTERN

Masséna, from the maison Louis XVIII once honored with a royal commission, takes the form of a wine glass of understated elegance and refinement. Here Baccarat's French craftsmanship stays restrained, trusting form and clarity over ornament.

Masséna is quiet luxury at heart, with a versatile look that suits many styles of table setting. Its bowl is shaped with room to swirl, letting the bouquet open as the wine turns.

Fine French crystal gives the bevels their dazzling play of light. Filled and lifted, the glass flashes and settles as the wine moves within it.

THE MAISON

Baccarat

Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.

Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.

Baccarat's light has never dimmed. Its crystal now glitters in palaces and private homes across the globe, chosen by collectors who know true brilliance when they see it. They know each piece comes from the same maison that once made crystal for kings.
