Baccarat, the iconic French house, made the Harcourt glass for King Louis-Philippe. Here its crystal turns to sculpture, and a pelican becomes a single graceful form, as calm as a bird at rest on still water.

The bird rises in one unbroken sweep, cool and glassy to the eye, a form that seems carved from frozen water. Its streamlined proportions keep every line spare and quiet. Baccarat was born with a king's permission. In 1764 King Louis XV allowed a glassworks to be founded in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of eastern France. There, among the forests of Lorraine, the first fires of a great French maison were lit.
Royal favor soon followed. In 1823 King Louis XVIII gave the iconic maison its first royal commission, the start of a long line of orders from royal houses and heads of state across the world. King Louis-Philippe commissioned the Harcourt glass. The grand Crystal Staircase of the Dolmabahçe Palace is built of Baccarat crystal.
